Manager, Capital Markets Development

Organization: Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)

Location: Downtown Lansing, MI

Pay Range:  $73,465 - $83,000 (plus a car allowance)

Position Description:

Reports to the Director of Program Administration and serves as the liaison with the financial community on behalf of MEDC.  Responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and coordinating the MEDC’s capital programs and policies including the Venture Michigan Fund, 21st Century Investment Program, Angel Tax incentive, and direct investments made in venture capital firms within Michigan.  Duties include creating, building, and maintaining business relationships with partners and private sector firms including private equity groups, entrepreneurs and business development groups; and directing the administration, strategic planning, business development, investment banking, and project management for the MEDC’s capital development initiatives and programs.  Functions include

  • Managing and monitoring results of the MEDC’s capital programs such as 21st Century Investment Fund, the Venture Michigan Fund, and the Angel Tax Incentive) to insure growth and to insure capital investment goals are met
  • Developing and implementing new programs to further increase access to investment capital for businesses
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with the investment fund and investment fund community
  • Providing consultation to Michigan businesses and businesses considering relocation regarding investment capital and investment opportunities 
  • Directly managing three direct reports within Capital Markets Development
  • Serving as liaison and relationship builder in Michigan’s financial community by connecting investors, investment fund partners/associates and companies seeking investment
  • Promoting and publicizing MEDC’s capital programs to the financial community through speeches and presentations and participation at conferences and panels

 

Qualifications:

Requires a Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field.  Must have three to five years related experience and/or training in business, finance and investments in the areas of capital marketing, venture capital, private equity, and/or commercial lending; business operations, public policymaking; public speaking.  and/or project management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must be able to effectively build relationships within the business community and possess the ability to network, advocate, educate, assist, report, and communicate with the business sector.  A strong understanding of venture capital, investment capital, angel financing, and business start-ups is desired.

Ability to utilize common business software such as work process, spreadsheet, and presentation software; and ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, legal, and contractual documents, as well as financial reports.  Must have strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to make presentations and write speeches and articles. Occasional travel is required, three days in Lansing and the other two days in various locations throughout the state (primarily in Southeast Michigan, with some travel to Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids).  Requires work during normal business hours with some evening obligations as necessary.
