  How to Conduct an In-Depth Interview

The interviewer should prepare an action plan for each interview. The following steps will help accomplish this.

  1. Study the candidate's general qualifications and work history. Determine what additional information is needed.

  2. Make a list of the questions you wish to ask.

  3. Make a list of the job and organizational information to be shared.

  4. Conduct the interview in a private place with NO INTERRUPTIONS!

  5. Start the interview on time.  No excuses.

  6. Treat all candidates alike.  Ask the same questions of each candidate.

  7. Show an active interest in each candidate.

  8. Provide an explanation of the hiring process.  Let them know when you will make a final decision.

  9. Gather job-related information (see sample of job-related questions).

  10. Listen carefully.  80%!
