Recent university leavers looking for a graduate job may be interested to hear some interview advice that could help candidates shine in the competitive employment market.

A poll of 900 employers has found that most bosses are receiving an average of 120 applicants for every graduate job vacancy, which increases the emphasis on performing well at an interview, the Metro reports.

Workers laid off in the recession are now competing with graduates, which has led to a 130 per cent increase in applications over the last two years.

Rachel Brushfield, a careers expert, told the paper: "Candidates need to be emotionally resilient, single minded, know what their unique brand is and be creative and persistent in their approach."

Sue Harrison, co-founder of studentgems.com, which commissioned the research, added: "Passing the interview process is becoming much more challenging. The candidate really must 'wow' the employer to stand out."

Aside from the interview, Ms Harrison recommended graduates gain as much experience as possible so their CV shows "they are suitable for the position".
